Norm Moyen lives in a log house he built in the woods of Metchosin, 20 miles west of Victoria. His family shares their acreage with the deer who wander about as they please. They’ve seen a few elusive cougars, the odd black bear has left teeth marks and paw prints around. They see eagles, hawks, owls and ravens. Once they were lucky enough to have also seen a wolf. He and his wife felt privileged to have been amongst a pod of killer whales and have also seen many gray whales, while whale watching in Ucluelet.

All of his carvings are created using BC wood and stone. He carves outdoors in an empty horse stall, the roof leaks a little, but it gets plenty of light and sometimes when he glances up he’ll see a deer curiously watching him; hear the beat of a large pair of raven’s wings; or the piercing shriek of a hawk. Norm has been carving about 20 years. As you can see Norm doesn’t have to look too far for inspiration.
